Adventure Travel in cuba Cuba is without a doubt one destination in the Caribbean where not only you can enjoy astonishing beaches but also plenty of other activities such as bird watching, diving, fishing, wind surfing, trecking and hiking among other things. One of the best places for trecking and hicking is Pico Turquino in Sierra Maestra. This historic region is strictly for lovers of the great outdoors. It was hard for Batista’s troops to get up into the Sierra Maestra mountains to smoke out the Fidelistas in the 1950s and it’s not much easier now to enter Cuba’s most magnificent national park. But hikers, bird-watchers and climbers insist that it’s well worth the journey from Manzanillo’s Sierra Maestra Airport via Yara. They enlist a guide at Villa Santo Domingo before journeying the last 5 km (3 miles) to the park entrance at Alto del Naranjo, 950 m (3,116 ft), with a rewarding view over the plains. The trail around Cuba’s highest mountain, 1,972 m (6,470 ft), leads you through the lush vegetation of virgin rain forest. This can be a one-day hike looping around back to Alto del Naranjo or a more challenging three-day guided mountain-trek (including the Turquino summit) with over night camping and ending at Las Cuevas on the Caribbean coast.
