Cuba: Bay of Pigs A draw for history buffs and SCUBA divers, the site of the abortive invasion of US-trained Cuban exiles - is an easy day trip from Cienfuegos or across the island from Varadero. The infamous landing took place on April 17, 1961 on Matanzas province’s south coast at Playa Larga, a scruffy black beachhead at the north end of the marshy Bahia de Cochinos. On the east side of the bay at Playa Girón 35 km (21 miles) to the south, a museum documents with artefacts and photos what an accompanying 15-minute film calls “the first defeat of US imperialism in the Americas”. Outside the museum is a Cuban Air Force plane used in bombing the supply ships. The nearby sheltered beach is more suited to swimming and snorkelling than to invasions.
