Guantanamo Base
The US naval base, leased since 1903 and not due to be returned to Cuban sovereignty till 2033, is 21 km (13 miles) south of Guantánamo city, noisy and unprepossessing. The only view you may get of the base—mostly watch- towers, security fences, military airstrips and radar posts—is if you take a cruise yacht past Punta Barlovento through Guantanamo Bay to the ports of Caimanera or Boqueron. Beyond the fences, trenches and minefields is a very comfortable garrison for 7,000 troops and relatives, with golf Course, sports stadium, supermarkets and cinemas. In recent years the comfort has been disturbed by thousands of Cuban and Haitian refugees for whom Guantánamo serves as a transit station while they seek entry to the USA—and more often are sent back home.
