Christopher Columbus discovered Cuba on his first voyage. He arrived in Cuba, thinking he was in the far East. He claimed the island for Spain. 1519(november 16)
Spanish conquerors established the city of San Cristobal de la Habana, the last in a total of seven villages founded during the Spanish colonization, which began in 1510.
1561
King Phillip II of Spain ordered that maritime traffic between the Spanish colonies in America and the metropolis be conducted in the form of convoys, fearing possible attacks by pirates and corsairs. Havana was established as the gathering point of all fleets.
1595
The spanish Royalty granted its first assistance to the incipient sugar production in Cuba.
1762 (August 12)
The Bristish occupied Havana, bringing with them new ideas and liberal practices in the local economy. The English occupation lasted 11 months.
1837 (November 19)
The first railroad in Cuba and the third in the World began operations.
1853 (January 28)
Cuba's National Hero Jose Marti was born in Havana. Marti became the organizer of the second and last war agaist the Spanish colonization in Cuba.
1868 (October 10)
Beginning of the Independence War agaist the Spanish. The War was known as The Year War.

Slavery was formally abolished, though it was actually practiced for another 6 years.

Beginning of the second and last war agaist the spanish in Cuba. This war lasted 3 years.
1895 (May 19)
Jose Marti died in combat in a placed called Dos Rios in the eastern part of Cuba.
1898 (february)
The Americans got involved in the War agaist Spain using as an excuse the attack on U.S battleship Maine.

The first Cuban Communist Party was founded by Carlos BaliƱo and Julio Antonio Mella.
1933 (August 12)
Dictator Gerardo Machado is forced to resign. A provisional goverment was established.
1953 (July 26)
Fidel Castro and few other followers attacked Moncada Garrison in Santiago de Cuba.
1956 (December 2)
Fidel Castro and other 82 expeditionaries landed in the eastern coasts of Cuba. Castro had been in exile in Mexico following the failed attempt on Moncada.
1959 (January 1)
Triumph of the revolution led by Fidel Castro agaist Fulgencio Batista's dictatorship.
1961 (April 16)
Bay of Pigs invasion from U.S carried out by Cuban-American. This was a victory of the Cuban revolutionary arm forces.

The so-called Missile Crisis took place.
1980
Cuba sends its first cosmonaut Arnaldo Tamayo into space.
1982
UNESCO declared Havana a World Heritage Site.
1997
The remains of El CHE are brought to Cuba from Bolivia.
1998
The Pope John Paul II visited Cuba. The Pope toured four provinces and delivered four Masses.
